Unlike most established plugin companies, Goodhertz didn’t start in 32-bit days, and when we started creating plugins in 2014, it wanted to do its best – quickly. As the world moves to 64-bit support, and adding 32-bit support affects our ability to write plugins effectively, it will only support 64-bit in current and future versions of Goodhertz All Plugins Bundle Mac plugins.

Main Features
Vulf Compressor:
Jack had read about an incomprehensible compression algorithm that an unknown Japanese DSP engineer had designed for the Boss SP-303 Dr. Sample had developed and enlisted Devin Kerr to help bring the project to life as a plug-in. As such, the Vulf Compressor is an attempt to emulate the sound and mysterious character of the SP-303’s “Vinyl Sim Compressor” while adding modern features and variations on the theme. This effect is especially popular in drum kits, especially looping or breakbeat styles. The compression seems to absorb sound, then release it with a different hi-hat emphasis, emphasizing the surround sound around the setup in dramatic and often exciting ways.
A collaboration with Vulfpeck’s Jack Stratton, the Vulf Compressor [see above] isn’t subtle, nor is it the addition you’re looking for to subtly drop a dB or two of dynamic range in acoustic vocals or guitars. The designers describe it as a compressor that can change the direction of a song and I certainly like it; I quickly started to see this as a creative effect rather than a traditional compressor.
However, this does not only affect the battery. Its gritty “early digital” sound was instantly familiar, and it worked extremely well for creating smooth, high-quality synths that could blend into whatever track you were mixing. During the review, I mostly worked in live bands, so I often overdid them, then wrote them with the mix button to add some character. However, if you work with loops, samples, or other beat-based electronic music, you’ll love it and I highly recommend giving it a try.
Other honorable mentions:
I love the tilt-style EQ, and Goodhertz’s suggestion, Tilt Shift, is a simple yet very rewarding take on the subject. The ability to alter the pitch of a source by “tilting” it around a midpoint to make it darker or brighter is a very smooth and natural way to alter its sonic character. I liked that while this plugin is simple and suitable for this type of processing, it gives you a few extra features that allow you to play with extended tonal balance, as well as great perceptual volume-locking controls. It makes it easier to hear the effect without being tempted by changes in perceived volume.
Goodhertz Plugins Elsewhere in the collection, the LOHI plugin offers creative quick access options based on wide high/low pass filters. I was quickly able to musically tone down some of the guitars in the mix and was impressed with how smooth the automation was when I just wanted to add it at certain points in the track. A section on Goodhertz’s website describes how they removed some of the automation limitations in the plugin’s design, stating that all controls in all of their plugins are fully automated and have no audio artifacts. Like many of its plug-ins, it also has many additional features such as a built-in limiter and a transformer-like analog unit.
On the more creative side of the lineup, the LOSSY plugin offers fun options based on low-fidelity digital playback devices such as B. Cellphone speakers, video streaming, and bit-kill effects. A client asked me to create a “broken speaker” effect for a song intro and it took me about 30 seconds to find the sound I was looking for with this plugin. I love tools that help me look good.
To sum up:
As you can see, I like these plugins. When trying to find sounds in a mix, I pay little attention and find that many Goodhertz instruments are just what you need in a busy mixing session. I want to be able to quickly listen to the treatment, more or less decide what I want, or maybe be pleasantly surprised when it takes me in an unexpected direction. Although there are so many great plugin options available right now, I’m very happy to welcome something different to my plugins folder. I find that tools that make me want to use my ears are a good fit and complement classic emulations that feel like I’m using hardware with a specific function. It may take a while, but I look forward to exploring the rest of the Goodhertz range in more detail.
